Free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel organises data in workbooks of sheets, calculates with formulas and functions, and summarises the results in charts, tables and pivot tables. The open-source apps below cover the same core job of building and editing spreadsheets on the Mac, and all of them open .xlsx files.

LibreOffice Calc is the spreadsheet in the LibreOffice suite, with OpenDocument as its own format plus pivot tables, charts and macros, and it saves .xlsx too. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors includes a spreadsheet editor built around the Office Open XML formats, with a ribbon-style toolbar similar to Excel's. Apache OpenOffice Calc is a slower-moving option that saves Excel files only in the older .xls format. Workbooks that rely on VBA macros, add-ins or recent Excel-only functions may not behave the same, so test those before switching.
