Free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft Office
Microsoft's office suite of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Microsoft Office, now sold as part of Microsoft 365, covers word processing, spreadsheets and presentations through Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The open-source suites below do the same core job on the Mac and open and save the Office file formats alongside their own.
LibreOffice is a full desktop suite built around the OpenDocument format, with separate apps for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and databases. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors uses a tabbed, ribbon-style toolbar and works with the Office Open XML formats natively. Apache OpenOffice offers a similar set of apps to LibreOffice but receives only occasional maintenance releases, and it saves Office files in the older .doc, .xls and .ppt formats. Complex documents can still look different after conversion, so check important files in any of these suites.
